The History of PCSH since 1904 till Today…

1904
Perak Chinese Maternity Hospital (”PCMH”) was set up in Jalan Chamberlain, Ipoh, Perak in 1904 as a 6 bedded maternity home to provide free maternity services to the wives of tin miners in Perak. It was established under the guidance of the Protector of Chinese for Perak Mr. William Cowan, the District Surgeon in Ipoh Dr. R. M. Connolly and community leaders Mr. Foo Choo Choon and Mr. Leong Fee.

The hospital which was owned and managed by The Perak Chinese Maternity Association (”TPCMA”) since 1923, was relocated from Jalan Chamberlain to a new building at its present location in then Kampar Road (now Jalan Raja Permaisuri Bainun). The new hospital was officially opened on 07.10.1939 by Sir Thomas Shenton Whitelegge Thomas, the British High Commissioner for the Federated Malay States.

During the Japanese Occupation, the hospital building was taken over by the Japanese Army and used as its administrative centre while the hospital was forced to move back to its original site at Jalan Chamberlain.

After the war, the building was leased to the British Military until 30.07.1949, when the hospital relocated back to Kampar Road where it remains till today.

The Tan Sri Runme Shaw Building, a new building extension to provide additional rooms, was completed in 1968 through donations from key donors and the community.

2003
In September 2003, the hospital was renamed as “Perak Community Specialist Hospital” (”PCSH”) to better reflect its evolution to a multi-disciplinary specialist hospital for the community. In that year, it also obtained its ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems accreditation.

2013 - 2018
A multi-year programme of hospital renovation and refurbishment was launched to improve the existing hospital block, which dates back from 1930s, giving it a fresh, more contemporary look. New services and facilities were also added.

2021
A new one-stop Heart Centre was established to treat heart patients, as well as for angiogram and angioplasty procedures. A 3rd Operation Theatre to cater for increased demand was also built and commissioned the same year.

A new 6-storey Main Wing building, adjacent to the existing block, was completed, providing the hospital with a new Admission Lobby and more space for our services and modern facilities.
